This stretch of highway connects Orange County with Lake Elsinore and surrounding communities. Frequent accidents occur on this stretch of highway for several reasons.

The highway winds through the Cleveland Nation Forest and at times the grade can be very steep. The roadway itself is narrow, one lane each direction, for almost the entire stretch. The Ortega Highway road surface is old and the shoulders are poorly maintained. When traveling over the road surface, it is not unusually to encounter potholes, loose gravel and deep furrows. The shoulders can have significant drop offs right next to the pavement at turns and therefore pose navigation risks. There is little shoulder to pull over if your car has trouble and frequently weather will contribute to greater risk on this section of freeway.

The truly dangerous part of Ortega highway, as it pertains to trucks, is the speed of travel and narrowness of the surface. As a short cut to the inland communities, trucks frequently navigate this stretch with trailers even though it is not advised, and motorists have to take care when trying to pass or avoid these trucks as they travel though the turns.

Our office has represented many victims injured on this roadway, not only from the improper operation of a truck but also roadway conditions. A truly dangerous and treacherous stretch of road, even Cal-trans has started roadway modifications to stop the high incident of collision.
