INTERSTATE 110

Interstate 10 is a frequent location for traffic accidents involving trucks. Interstate 110 is an integral roadway which extends from San Pedro, through downtown Los Angeles, ultimately ending in Pasadena. I-110 is another older freeway, as it was built in the 1930s and despite being only slightly less than 32 miles long, it is a very important passageway. Also called the Harbor Freeway, I-110 south, along with Interstate 710 south are the only two entrances to the tremendously busy Port of Los Angeles.

The Port of Los Angeles is the busiest seaport in the United States. Since 2002, the congestion caused by too many ships at one time has caused severe delays, as ships cannot be unloaded in a timely fashion. Many believe the port’s capacity cannot keep up with the demand, and that the freeways and railroads cannot handle the volume as well.

The Harbor Freeway also connects to the Vincent Thomas Bridge, which allows access to the Port as well as Terminal Island. This is an area of congestion, as large trucks are constantly coming and going, transporting cargo. A little ways north, before downtown Los Angeles, I-110 north meets with Interstate 10. This transition along with the normal downtown traffic always creates delays. Continuing north on the 110, or the Pasadena Freeway, the road narrows to only two lanes as you head into the city of Pasadena. It is evident on this short stretch how old this freeway is. The on-ramps are very short, and the curves of the road can sometimes make the drive difficult.
